mise en place

in this house
there is ritual

there are knives
wine and truth

souls resting
at room temperature

butterflied
ready for the heat

steel drawn
a stainless flash

tok, tok, tok
tok, tok, tok

peppers, onions and
herbs shuffle down

words and emotion
follow in place

honest, raw
unprocessed

heart to mouth
hand to blade

the rhythm
rises and falls

this is the way
to perfect

this is how to
cook for the angels

raise a glass
to the gods

and the princes
of your near wild heaven

  1. I love this one, for do many reasons, Rene. "knives, wine and truth" – that could be the name for the bistro we open on Main Street, in that little mill town turned artist colony. I dig it.

  2. I really enjoyed the way in which you wrote this piece. I love couplet stanzas. I also love the simple language and the words you chose. I could feel that whatever cooking you do, it is heartfelt and soulful. You put a lot into it and it has a huge place in your life. Excellent. P.S. You commented on my piece; thanks for the kind words, though it wasn't necessarily a pity party. πŸ™‚ Again, thoroughly enjoyed.

  3. Sabio, Thank You :)The kitchen as a confessional, a place where when we busy ourselves with a task ( the ritual) we tend to be more open with one another…honest, raw and unfiltered. If we take care in how we prepare ourselves and the food.. that is the way to perfection. I am still learning how to be clear with my writing. I thank you for your feedback πŸ™‚
