leaves

Anne Marie’s
stretched out
like a queen

across the back

of a Cutlass Supreme

smokin’ weed

and talking with Kumar

watching leaves

scud across
the reservoir

Mike is a jerk

cuz he hasn’t yet
called her

two months at college

and he can’t be bothered
Well you know

he can go climb a tree

cuz he ain’t got

the common
decency

to give the mother

of his child
a shout

damn college boys

got it all figured out

daisy

go on

an’
eat your
cake

on your

pretty
little
plate

cross

your fingers
at your
ankles

beautiful

fools
get the best of
everthin’

hid

under the
skins of
careless lovers

did your momma

teach you that,
when she taught you
how to pray ?

did your daddy

praise you
when you bat
yo’ eyes?

you draw them

in
with your satin
on their sin
make them
weep
with your
sighs

go on

an’
hook their
arms

with your

clever
little
charms

tell them

stories
’bout
your conquests

you’re a child
of god
jus’ doin’ her
daddy’s work

say it

enough
you’ll start
believin’

did your momma

teach you that,
when she taught you
how to pray ?

did your daddy

praise you
when you
bat yo’ eyes?

you draw them

in
with your satin
on their sin
sweet
little lambs
flock to
lies

good shoes

the day i found my ways

i caught myself
in a tangle
tightly twined
around
a forkful of
spaghetti from a can’t
just pullin’ the wool
over easy
under the radar
love, life, and my pursuits;
a hapless sock thread
ensnared by a tack
on the threshold
unwinding, revealing
a novice habit trail
from door
to table, to chair, to bed
just livin’
but barely
breaking a sweat
smokin’
a bowl of dead ends
Is that all there is?
Peggy Lee, blinked
lookin’ for
high bars
in low places
forcin’ a smile,
though

your eyes
order a double
some things
are better left unsaid

but winked at…hell yeah
I caught your act
you charlatan
I say strippin’ off
my socks
I know your ways
You ought to play
out in the mud
in your good shoes
maybe, someday

For 100 Word Song
The song prompt was Patti Smith’s “People Have The Power.”
Love her and I have always felt a kinship with her lyrics
This is my somewhat personal, disconnected take on her classic.
I’m way over 100 words…
Rene~gade.

the baker’s daughter

Angela

the artsy girl
down the hall
can’t tell you much
about her
but what she knew
about me
could fill at least
a thousand ears
Angela
kept birthday candles
in a jar
by her door
she’d light one
whenever I’d come around
then she’d spit
on her burnt fingers, cussin’
yeah, well that’s enough outta me

Now…
“Tell me what
you are

by what you wish for,
bear claw,
Are you
the icing
or
the cake?”

ascension

one last broken
word
one first bite of
skin
let heaven and free will
ring
emancipation

thunderclap mistress
thirst obscene
lips parted
full
dripping sunset nectar
the moon is gold
my eyes are green

the world is radiant
jasper
the ceiling endless
aquamarine
i have bled into the river
weeping
it knows my name

For Magpie Tales

Young Woman Picking the Fruit of Knowledge, 1892 by Mary Cassatt

dirtywords

Such rich hatred
for empty hours
and new moons,
times of dark realization
of who and what
we truly are

We are holes
furiously burned
into blinding white pages
that no wine, prayer or
pleading fill.
So we ride

We ride for lust,
(certainly not love)
We ride to favor our muses
and kill our darlings
We ride
to free worlds!

Worlds like wheels
spinning ’round and ’round
Great expectant moon
sanctuaries
built on body heat
and dirty work

We ride
for the thrill of pearls
charmed from snakes
and silk purses.
For letters from unfaithful muses,
We are fools
